But organisers have vowed a percentage of those will be reserved exclusively for Fylde coast folk.

From next week, people will be able to register online to be in with a chance of getting a ticket to the Lights extravaganza on September 3.
Tickets will be allocated at random in a lottery-style.

And Real Radio and Smooth Radio, who are behind this year’s Switch On weekend, will announce the rest of the star studded line up in the coming days.

Hoteliers and tourism leaders have hailed the announcement that music legend Robbie will be man behind the switch this year as a massive coup for the resort.

Claire Smith, vice-chairman of StayBlackpool and owner of the Number One guest house, said: “You can’t really top Robbie can you?

“The news just keeps getting better and better for Blackpool at the moment.

“I am sure many of the smaller hoteliers will have been flooded with calls for rooms after the announcement was made.

BLACKPOOL has long been home to some of the best of British stand-up and now it really will be paved with comedy gold.

Famous quotes, sketches and catchphrases from the likes of Morecambe and Wise, Ken Dodd, Les Dawson and Dad’s Army will be inlaid in granite for Blackpool’s equivalent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame: the Comedy Carpet.

It is the brainchild of Reg Haslem, director of development at Blackpool regeneration company ReBlackpool.

“The Comedy Carpet is going to be our Angel of the North but horizontal, it’s that sort of impact,” said a spokesman for ReBlackpool.

“The quality of what’s going in and the detail that is achieved will be something talked about far and wide and will be a reason to come to Blackpool to talk about and see how it ties in with this wonderful setting.”

The multi-million pound project is expected to be launched next year. Biographer Graham McCann is collating the cream of British comedy lines.

“It will be a kind of physical overview of British comedy,” said McCann, who has written biographies of Morecambe & Wise, Frankie Howerd and Terry Thomas. “The idea was to choose some core comedians most associated with Blackpool and the area like Ken Dodd, Morecambe & Wise and Les Dawson.

“This has since broadened out to encompass the whole of the UK.

“There will be lines from British stand-up comedians, British sitcoms and catchphrases. The carpet will resemble a kind of comedy mosaic. They have really done it in a very imaginative way. It is very striking and unique.”

As well as well-known routines and dialogue of Morecambe & Wise such as, “I am playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order,” there will be hundreds of other lines. These include Les Dawson mother-in-law jokes, catchphrases from Only Fools And Horses, Absolutely Fabulous and Little Britain.

Elaine Smith, chairwoman of Blackpool Civic Trust, is convinced the Comedy Carpet and Nickelodeon Land, to open at Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach next April, will give the town a new boost.

“We can’t wait,” she said.

BLACKPOOL Council has awarded the management of the town’s 18-hole municipal golf course to a private company for the next 25 years – if it hits investment targets.

Mack Trading, based in Kent, was awarded the contract last week. It will take over the day-to-day running of Stanley Park Golf Course from the council.

The initial contract will last 10 years but will be extended by a further 15 if the operator invests at least £300,000 during the period.

The council said the search was spurred by the decline in income from the course and the need for investment and a sustainable long-term plan. It also wants to explore the possibilities of linking the course to corporate events in the town.

Under the terms of the deal Mack will pay the council at least £70,000 a year and agree a profit share arrangement if higher levels of income are achieved. The business already runs 10 other municipal courses and was a clear winner in a council evaluation comparing it with its rivals.

The council said: “Company A [Mack Trading], who operate ten municipal golf courses scored highly, with a subsequent visit to one of their courses and business meeting confirmed they are a suitable company with a wealth of experience and expertise in relation to golf course management and development and in particular the development of junior golf programmes.”

The course is owned by the council but leased by Blackpool Park Golf Club.

A £39m deal to take Blackpool Tower, the Winter Gardens and the Golden Mile into public ownership will not be affected by Government spending cuts according to the town’s council.

The local authority said the deal had been completed and refurbishment work is now being carried out. A new operator, Merlin Entertainments, will take over the day-to-day management in November.

There has been some speculation that the new Government’s eagerness to slash budgets could derail the scheme which has been funded by a collection of public bodies.

The European Regional Development Fund committed £14m, the Northwest Regional Development Agency put in £7.9m, Blackpool Council committed £10m and the Homes and Communities Agency paid £7m. As well as buying the attractions, the funding will also be used for a £10m programme of repairs for the Tower.

Following the Chancellor George Osborne’s decision to announce cuts worth £6.2bn some reports have suggested an £8m grant for the refurbishment of the tower was being withdrawn.

A spokesman for the council said he was not aware of such a decision and the Homes and Communities Agency – part of the Department for Communities and Local Government, which is facing a 7.5% budget cut – said its contribution of £7m was already committed.

“The funding has already gone to Blackpool from the last financial year’s budget”, he said. But the Northwest Development Agency could not clarify the position with its £7.9m contribution. All the UK’s RDAs are expected to share cuts of £270m.

The decision to buy the assets from Trevor Hemmings has been made with the belief that heavy investment in the landmark buildings will secure the long-term future of the area by rejuvenating tourism.

Blackpool has emerged as one of the leading contenders in a new poll to find the best beach in Britain.

The north-west resort’s famous sands have been nominated alongside other popular beaches from around the UK as part of the Cadbury Flake 99 Great British Beach Awards.

People who enjoy staying in Blackpool hotels are being urged to vote for the resort, which faces competition from the likes of Margate in Kent, Southwold in Suffolk and Northumberland’s Bamburgh.

The nominated beaches were compiled by experts including Bill Oddie, lead author at Lonely Planet David Else and the Mail on Sunday’s travel editor Frank Barrett.

Mr Else said the shortlist “reflects the charm and variety of Britain’s coastline”.

He added: “I hope people have as much fun voting for their favourites as I had selecting my nominations.”

People can vote online until May 26th and the winner will be announced on June 7th.

Work on a £62 million government project to rebuild the seafront in Blackpool began in 2005.

PUB chain JD Wetherspoon has resurrected plans which would see it investing in two new pubs in Blackpool town centre.

Work is already underway to convert the ground floor of the former Pricebusters building on Bank Hey Street, and the bar which will create 40 new jobs is due to open on July 2.

Now the firm has submitted a new planning application to the council for a two-storey building on its site on Market Street.

A previous scheme for a £1.4m pub on the land has never been acted upon.

Last year the company put the site up for sale, but now it is seeking to build a contemporary pub which would boast a rooftop terrace with sea views.

Both schemes have been developed by Blackpool-born architect Andy Ince.
He said: “We have gone for a quality design for the Market Street site and because Wetherspoons is very keen to be family friendly and female friendly, the aim is also to ensure people can see inside.

“The roof top terrace won’t be able to be open all the time, but we thought it would be nice if people were able to occasionally sit out there and see the sea.

“We are now fitting out the Bank Hey Street premises and we have designed the shopfront to be in sympathy with the building, so it has an art deco theme and a 1930s feel.”

See Wednesday’s Gazette for full story.
